4.58ct Sunset Tourmaline

This 4.58ct sunset tourmaline gave me a big headache before I ever put it on the dop.

The rough had especially striking dichroism: from one direction, it showed an open orange-yellow; from another, a vivid rosy pink with a darker purple cast. I loved that saturated rose-purple color, but orienting the stone to prioritize it would have meant sacrificing considerably more weight.

So the design became a balance between yield and color - between preserving the size of the gem and creating the most compelling color experience. I spent a long time agonizing over the orientation and final shape.

In the end, I chose a trillion cut. Rather than forcing the stone to favor one direction, the design allows all colors to meet: orange, gold, rose, and a touch of purple melt together into one complex sunset hue. There is no harsh divide through the center—just a seamless shift of color as you turn it from angle to angle.

It is not a loud, neon tourmaline. It has a beautiful earthy brown undertone that gives it depth and mood. On a rainy day, it becomes quiet and mysterious, holding its flashes close. On a sunny day though, the stone opens up and the sunset colors come alive.

A gem for someone who loves color with nuance: understated, humble and a little moody. Oh how I can stare at it all day.
